The California music scene in the 70's was basking in the after-
glow of the Beach Boys' and the Doors' successes in the late 60's.
With the new decade came plenty of new sounds though.  One of 
which was the combination of two brilliant musicians from New York,
high on that L.A. scene: 

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan.
 
Rolling Stone magazine describes them as "less a band than a 
concept, they are one of the most advanced, successful, and 
mysterious pop units of the 70's.  Combining pop hooks with jazz 
harmonies, complicated time changes and cryptic, often highly 
ironic lyrics, the band sounded like no one else."

As a kid my dad always had plenty of Steely Dan on.  I describe 
their sound as a blend of jazz-rock now, but I'll let you 
decide. This is undoubtably one of their greatest hits:
